How to Fill Out a PDF Form Online (Free, No Software)
Filling out a PDF form used to mean printing it, writing by hand, and scanning it back. You don't need to do that anymore. With a browser-based tool you can type directly onto the page and download a clean, professional result in under a minute.
What you need
Just a web browser. There's nothing to install, and with a private tool like our free PDF editor your file never leaves your device — it's processed entirely on your computer.
Fill out a PDF form in 4 steps
- Open the editor and drop in your PDF. Drag the file onto the page or click to browse.
- Fill the detected fields. If the PDF has real form fields (an "AcroForm"), they light up automatically as text boxes, checkboxes and dropdowns. Click and type.
- Add anything that's missing. No form fields? Use the Text tool to click anywhere and type. Add checkmarks, dates, or a signature as needed.
- Download. Click Download filled PDF. Leave Flatten on so your entries are baked into the page and look identical in every PDF reader.
Fillable fields vs. flat PDFs
There are two kinds of PDF forms:
- Interactive forms have clickable fields already built in. These are the easiest — the tool detects them for you.
- Flat or scanned forms are just images of a document. There are no fields to click, so you place text on top yourself. See our guide on filling a scanned PDF with no form fields.
Tips for a clean result
- Match the font size to the surrounding text so your answers blend in.
- Use the checkmark tool for tick boxes instead of typing an "X".
- Zoom in for precise placement on tight forms.
- Always flatten before sending, so recipients can't accidentally change your answers.
Is it safe to fill PDFs online?
It depends on the tool. Many online editors upload your document to a server. If your form contains personal information — a tax ID, address, or bank details — choose a tool that works locally in your browser. Our editor never uploads anything, which is the safest option for sensitive paperwork.
